Una splendida Beyoncé trentaquattrenne sale sul palco del Global Citizen Festival del 2015, per cantare, visibilmente emozionata, insieme a Eddie Vedder – cantante dei Pearl Jam – la storica canzone del 1979 di Bob Marley “Redemption song“.

Il Global Citizen Festival, nato nel 2012, è un festival annuale di musica organizzato dal Global Poverty Project, un movimento che si pone l’obiettivo di aumentare il numero e l’efficacia delle persone che compiono azioni per porre fine alla povertà estrema. Il direttore creativo del festival è Chris Martin, cantante dei Coldplay.

Durante l’esibizione di Beyoncé e Vedder sullo schermo del palco appare l’immagine di Nelson Mandela. Si tratta di alcuni estratti dal discorso che Mandela tenne il 3 febbraio 2005 a Londra, davanti a ventiduemila persone in Trafalgar Square, per chiedere ai leader mondiali di porre fine alla povertà.
Ecco le parti del discorso di Mandela sulla povertà contenute nel video:

“Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. And overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life. While poverty persists, there is no true freedom. […]
Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation. […]
Of course the task will not be easy. But not to do this would be a crime against humanity, against which I ask all humanity now to rise up.”

“Come la schiavitù e l’apartheid, la povertà non è naturale. È una cosa creata dall’uomo e può essere superata e sradicata dalle azioni degli esseri umani. E superare la povertà non è un gesto di carità. Si tratta di un atto di giustizia. È la tutela di un diritto umano fondamentale, il diritto alla dignità, a una vita decorosa. Finché la povertà persiste, non c’è vera libertà. […]
A volte su una generazione ricade la necessità di essere grande. Voi potete essere quella grande generazione. […]
Ovviamente il compito non sarà facile. Ma non farlo sarebbe un crimine contro l’umanità, crimine contro il quale chiedo a tutta l’umanità ora di sollevarsi.”

Beyoncé si è interessata di problemi sociali fin dai tempi in cui cantava nelle Destiny’s Child. Nel 2013 la rivista Time la inserisce tra le 100 persone più influenti al mondo, riconfermandola nel 2014. Beyoncé è l’unica cantante nominata dalla rivista TIME nella classifica Person of the year, che nel 2016 la elegge con le seguenti motivazioni: “In a political charged year, 2016, Beyoncé raised her voice. The singer has a long history of activism: she’s always been a feminist; she’s drawn attention to police brutality; she’s taken a side in politics.” (a favore di Barack Obama prima e Hilary Clinton poi).
